Our Little Friend: The Preposition

Prepositions are one of the biggest challenges for learners of English. A small change of preposition can often give a sentence a very different or opposite meaning (He went up the stairs Ele subiu as escadas, He went down the stairs Ele desceu as escadas). There are many rules involving prepositions and today we will focus on their order in the sentence. The position is determined by the word it will accompany (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc). Follow the rules below and make sentences using the examples.

Preposições são um dos maiores desafios para estudantes de inglês. Uma mudança pequena na preposição frequentemente resulta em grandes diferenças em significado e até em sentidos opostos. Existem várias regras em relação às preposições e hoje vamos nos concentrar na ordem da frase. A posição é determinada pelas palavras que acompanharão (substantivos, verbos, adjetivos, ect). Siga as regras abaixo e faça sentenças usando os exemplos.


Posição da preposição na frase:
(Preposição ABOUT é a preposição em destaque hoje. É uma preposição bem usada em inglês e merece mais atenção).


1. Substantivo + ABOUT
Noun + Be + About + Noun
This article was about social development.


Noun + About + Noun
Our lawyer gave me and advice about my contract.



Substantivos frequentemente usados antes de “about”: a book about, a report about, news about, a story about, a movie about, a play about, a discussion about, a conversation about, an argument about.


2. Adjetivo + ABOUT
Adjective + About + Noun
They were extremely understanding about out late arrival.
Adjetivos frequentemente usados antes de “about”: kind about, nice about, sweet about, understanding about, charming about, rude about, unkind about, nasty about, mean about.


3. Verbo + About
Verb + About + Noun
I read about the new development in the newspaper.



Verbos frequentemente usados antes de “about”: forget about, complain about, argue about, moan about, talk about, think about, wonder about, dream about, joke about, laugh about.
