In the world we live today, being fluent in English is not an advantage anymore, it´s a real need.
Executives today have to be able to perform their daily tasks in English as well as they do it in Portuguese. Having a meeting, a business lunch, a conference call or receiving a visitor from abroad are things that happen each time more often in the routine of Brazilian executives, and the tendency is that interaction with foreigners increase exponentially as the Olympic Games and the World Cup events are about to happen in the country.
The games don´t only interfere in the tourism, all the economy changes because the world turns its eyes to Brazil. Logistics, construction, civil Engineering, all areas are moved by the events to come, as companies start arriving in the country a long time ahead of the games.
If you are alive and working, have no doubts, you need to be fluent in English! Don´t waste your time, start looking for a serious institution for you to start developing your English. Researches showed that only 7% of Brazilian professionals are totally fluent in English. It means that even if English is not an advantage nowadays, it can become one if you are really willing to master it and differentiate yourself by being 100% fluent. It´s also known that people with the same professional skills can make up to 25% more in terms of salary when compared to other executives doing the same tasks, but with no fluency in English.
Think to yourself, what is easier for a company: a) get someone who is fluent in English and teach this person your job, or b) making you become fluent in English? The market answer lately has been option b: people are getting fired so that other people, with less technical knowledge but total fluency in English is being hired and taught technical skills.
